The general line of the October issue of The Musical Magazine consists in showcasing the so-called light genre and Sverdlovsk State Academic Theatre of Musical comedy as its leading representative. Almost immediately after its foundation eighty years ago, the theatre had become the leading artistic force amongst Russian theatres related to the light genre.  It had accumulated progressive ideas and best creative resources assembled from composers, playwrights, stage directors, actors, stage designers and choreographers. The high quality of such an accumulation of forces was once again confirmed at Anniversary Octave festival that took place in September 2013 and spanned over eight days. This festival took place in Yekaterinburg (formerly Sverdlovsk) and assembled the best representative of the light genre from all over Russia and both neighboring and remote foreign countries. The program of the festival included most recent premieres of the theatre ranging from classical operetta to contemporary musical productions.  Also, there was a retrospective show-reel about the history of creation of the theatre and a gala concert with the participation of operetta and musical stars from various regions of Russia and from European theatres.

The program of the festival also included an important event commemorating Vladimir Kurochkin, remarkable stage director with the title of National Artist of USSR. He had been heading the theatre for many years and had defined its creative priorities for a long time to come. A memorial plate was opened in his honor.

The climax of the anniversary events was a round-table discussion dedicated to the challenges presented by the theatres of light genre.  The participants, prominent theatrical critics of Russia and renowned activists of domestic musical theatre, became the authors of the articles-reflections that constituted the principal part of the October issue of The Musical Magazine.  Other important materials included in the issue were reviews of operetta and musical premieres in metropolitan and regional theatres, summarizing articles about theatrical events related to the light genre, materials related to Operetta Land, Competition for Young Artists of Operetta and Musical that took place at the end of October in Moscow, and much more.

As always, readers can find a subscription form for the year of 2014 at the end of the issue.
